　そのうちに上元（じょうげん）の節となった。母方の従兄弟（いとこ）に呉（ご）という者があって、それが迎いに来たので一緒に遊びに出て、村はずれまでいった時、呉の家の僕（げなん）が呉を呼びに来て伴（つ）れていった。王は野に出て遊んでいる女の多いのを見て、興にまかせて独りで遊び歩いた。
　一人の女（むすめ）が婢（じょちゅう）を伴（つ）れて、枝に着いた梅の花をいじりながら歩いていた。それは珍らしい佳（い）い容色（きりょう）で、その笑うさまは手に掬（すく）ってとりたいほどであった。王はじっと見詰めて、相手から厭（いや）がられるということも忘れていた。女は二足三足ゆき過ぎてから婢を振りかえって、
「この人の眼は、ぎょろぎょろしてて、盗賊（どろぼう）みたいね。」
　といって、花を地べたに打っちゃり、笑いながらいってしまった。王はその花を拾ったが悲しくて泣きたいような気になって立っていた。そして魂のぬけた人のようになって怏怏（おうおう）として帰ったが、家へ帰ると花を枕の底にしまって、うつぶしになって寝たきりものもいわなければ食事もしなかった。
　母親は心配して祈祷（きとう）したりまじないをしたりしたが、王の容態はますます悪くなるばかりで、体もげっそり瘠（や）せてしまった。医師が診察して薬を飲まして病気を外に発散させると、ぼんやりとして物に迷ったようになった。母親はその理由（わけ）を聞こうと思って、

　といって訊いた。王はそこで、
「君と散歩に出た日にね。」
　というようなことを前おきにして、精（くわ）しく事実を話して、
「どうか心配してくれたまえ。」
　といった。呉は笑って、
「君も馬鹿だなあ、そんなことはなんでもないじゃないか。僕が代って探してみよう。野を歩いている女だから、きっと家柄の女じゃないよ。もし、まだ許嫁（いいなづけ）がなかったなら、なんでもないし、許嫁があるにしても、たくさん賄賂をつかえば、はかりごとは遂（と）げられるよ。まァそれよりか病気をなおしたまえ、この事は僕がきっと良いようにして見せるから。」
　といった。王はこれを聞くと口を開けて笑った。
　呉はそこで王の室を出て母親に知らせた。母親は呉と相談して女の居所を探したが、名もわからなければ家もわからないので、その年恰好の容色の佳い女のいそうな家を聞きあわして、それからそれと索（さが）してもどうしても解らなかった。母親はそれを心配したがどうすることもできなかった。
　そして王の方は、呉が帰ってから顔色が晴ばれとして来て、食事もやっとできるようになった。
　二、三日して呉が再び来た。王は待ちかねていたのですぐ問うた。
「君、あの事はどうだったかね。」
　呉はほんとうの事がいえないので、でたらめをいった。
「よかったよ。僕はまただれかと思ったら、僕の姑（おば）の女（むすめ）さ、すなわち君の従妹じゃないか。ちょうどもらい手を探していたところだよ。身内で結婚する嫌いはあるが、わけをいえば纏（まと）まらないことはないよ。」
　王は喜びを顔にあらわして訊いた。
「家はどこだろう。」
　呉はまた口から出まかせにいった。
「西南の山の中だよ。ここから三十里あまりだ。」
　王はまたそこで呉に幾度も幾度も頼んだ。
「ほんとに頼むよ。いいかね。」
「いいとも。僕が引き受けた。」
　呉はそういって帰っていった。王はそれから食事が次第に多くなって、日に日に癒（なお）っていった。そして思いだしては枕の底を探して彼（か）の梅の花を出した。花は萎（しお）れていたけれどもまだ散っていなかった。王は彼の女のことを考えながら、それが彼の女でもあるようにその花をいじった。
　王は呉の返事を待っていたが呉が来ないので、ふしんに思って手紙を出した。呉は用事にかこつけて来なかった。王は怒って悶えていた。母親はまた病気になられては大変だと思ったので、急に他から嫁をもらうことにして、それをちょっと相談したが、王は首を振って振りむかなかった。そして、ただ毎日呉の来るのを待っていたが、どうしても呉が来ないので、王はたちまち怒って呉を怨んだが、ふと思いなおして、三十里はたいした道でもない、他人に頼む必要がないといって、彼の梅の花を袖に入れて、気を張って出かけていった。家の人はそれを知らなかった。
　王は独り自分の影を路伴（みちづ）れにしていった。そして道を聞くこともできないので、ただ南の方の山を望んでいった。ほぼ三十里あまりもゆくと、山が重なりあって、山の気が爽（さわ）やかに肌に迫り、寂（ひっそり）として人の影もなく、ただ鳥のあさり歩く道があるばかりであった。遥かに谷の下の方を見ると、花が咲き乱れて樹の茂った所に、僅（わず）かな人家がちらちらと見えていた。
　王は山をおりてその村へといった。わずかしかない人家は皆茅葺（かやぶき）であったが、しかし皆風流な構えであった。北向きになった一軒の家があった。門の前は一めんに柳が植（う）わり、牆（かき）の内には桃や杏（あんず）の花が盛りで、それに長い竹をあしらってあったが、野の鳥はその中へ来て格傑（かっけつ）と鳴いていた。
　王はどこかの園亭（にわ）だろうと思ったので、勝手には入らなかった。振りむくとその家の向いに、大きな滑らかな石があった。王はそれに腰をかけて休んでいた。と、牆の内に女がいて、声を長くひっぱって、
「小栄（しょうえい）。」
　と呼ぶのが聞えた。それはなまめかしい細い声であった。王はそのままその声を聞いていると、一人の女が庭を東から西の方へゆきながら、杏の花の小枝を執（と）って、首を俯向（うつむ）けて髪にさそうとして、ひょいと頭を挙（あ）げた拍子（ひょうし）に王と顔を見あわすと、もうそれをささずににっと笑って花をいじりながら入っていった。それは上元の日に遭った彼の女であった。王はひどく喜んで、すぐ入っていきたいと思ったが、姨（おば）の名も知らなければ往復したこともないので、何といって入っていっていいかその口実（こうじつ）がみつからなかった。そうかといって門内に訊（き）くような人もいないので訊くこともできなかった。王は仕方なしに朝から夕方まで、石に腰をかけたりその辺を歩いたりして、その家に入ってゆく手がかりを探していたので、ひもじいことも忘れていた。その時彼の女が時どき半面をあらわして窺（のぞ）きに来て王がそこにいつもいるのを不審がるようであった。夕方になって一人の老婆が杖にすがって出て来て王にいった。
「どこの若旦那だね。朝から来ていなさるそうだが、何をしておりなさる。ひもじいことはないかね。」
　王は急いで起（た）ってお辞儀して、
「私は親類を見舞おうと思って、来ているのです。」
　といったが、老婆は耳が遠いので聞えなかった。そこで王はまた大きな声でいった。それはやっと聞こえたと見えて、
「親類は何という苗字だね。」
　といったが、王は苗字を知らないので返事ができなかった。老婆は笑っていった。
「苗字を知らずに、どうして親類が見舞われるのだよ。お前さんは書（ほん）ばかり読んでいる人だね。私の家へお出でよ、御飯でもあげよう。汚い寝台もあるから、明日の朝帰って、苗字を聞いてまた来るがいいよ。」
　王はその時空腹を感じて物を喫（く）いたかった。また彼の美しい女の傍（そば）へいくこともできる。王は大喜びで老婆について入っていった。
　門の内は白い石を石だたみにして、紅（あか）い花がその道をさしはさみ、それが入口の階段にちらちらと散っていた。西へ折れ曲ってまた一つの門を潜（くぐ）ると、豆の棚（たな）と花の架（たな）とが庭一ぱいになっていた。老婆は王を案内して家の内へ入った。白く塗った壁が鏡のようにてらてらと光って、窓の外には花の咲き満ちた海棠（かいどう）の枝が垂れていて、それが室の内へもすこしばかり入っていた。室の内は敷物、几（つくえ）、寝台にいたるまで、皆清らかで沢（つや）のある物ばかりであった。
　王が腰をおろすと、窓の外へだれかが来て窺くのがちらちら見える。老婆が、
「小栄、早く御飯をこしらえるのだよ。」
　というと、外から女がかんだかい声で、
「へい。」
　と返辞をした。そこで二人の坐が定まったので、王が精しく自分の家柄を話した。すると老婆が、
「お前さんの母方のお祖父（じい）さんは、呉という姓じゃなかったかね。」
　といった。そこで王が、
「そうです。」
　というと、老婆は驚いた。
「では、お前さんは、私の甥（おい）だ。お母さんは私の妹だ。しょっちゅう貧乏しているうえに、男手がないから、ついつい往来もしなかったが、甥がこんなに大きくなってるのに、まだ知らなかったとは、どうしたことかなあ。」
　王はいった。
「私がここへ来たのは、姨（おば）さんを見舞いに来たのですよ。ついあわてたものですから、苗字を忘れたのですよ。」
　老婆はいった。
「私の苗字は秦（しん）だよ。ついぞ子供はなかったが、妾（めかけ）にできた小さな子供があって、その母親が他へ嫁にいったものだから、私が育てているが、それほど馬鹿でないよ。だが躾（しつけ）がたりないでね、気楽で悲しいというようなことは知らないよ。今、すぐここへ来させて逢わせるがね。」
　間もなく婢が飯を持って来た。肥った鶏の雛などをつけてあった。老婆は王に、
「何もないがおあがりよ。」
　といって勧めた。王がいうままに膳について食べてしまうと、婢が来て跡始末をした。老婆はその婢にいった。
「寧子を呼んでお出で。」
「はい。」
　婢が出ていってからやや暫くして、戸外（そと）でひそかに笑う声がした。すると老婆は、
「嬰寧（えいねい）、お前の姨（おば）さんの家の兄さんがここにいるよ。」
　といった。戸外では一層笑いだした。それは婢が女を伴（つ）れにいっているところであった。婢は女を推（お）し入れるようにして伴れて来た。女は口に袖を当ててその笑いを遏（と）めようとしていたが遏まらなかった。老婆はちょと睨（にら）んで、
「お客さんがあるじゃないかね。これ、これ、それはなんということだよ。」
　といった。女はやっと笑いをこらえて立った。王はそれにお辞儀をした。老婆は女に向っていった。
「これは王さんといって、お前の姨さんの子供だよ。一家の人も知らずにいて、人さまを笑うということがありますか。」
　王は老婆に、
「この方はおいくつです。」
　と女の年を問うた。老婆にはそれが解らなかったので、王はまた繰りかえした。すると女がまた笑いだして顔をあげることができなかった。老婆は王に向っていった。
「私の躾がたりないといったのは、それだよ。年はもう十六だのに、まるで、嬰児（あかんぼ）のようだよ。」
　王はいった。
「私より一つ妹ですね。」
　老婆はいった。
「おお、お前さんは、もう十七か。お歳になるのだね。」
　王はうなずいた。
「そうですよ。」
　老婆が訊いた。
「お前さんのお嫁さんは、何という人だね。」
「まだありませんよ。」
「お前さんのような才貌（きりょう）で、なぜ十七になるまでお嫁さんをもらわないね。嬰寧もまだ約束もないし、まことに良い似合だが、惜しいことには身内という、かかわりがあるね。」
　王は何もいわずに嬰寧をじっと見ていて、他へ眼をやる暇がなかった。婢は女に向って小声で囁（ささや）いた。
「眼がきょろきょろしていますから、まだ盗賊（どろぼう）がやまないでしょう。」
　女はまた笑いながら娘を見かえって、
「花桃が咲いたか咲かないか、見て来ようよ。」
　といって、急いで起ち、袖を口に当てながら、刻み足で歩いていった。そして門の外へ出たかと思うと崩れるように大声を出して笑った。老婆も体を起して、婢を呼んで王のために夜具の仕度をさしながら王にいった。
「お前さん、ここへ来るのは容易でないから、来たからにゃ、三日や五日は逗留（とうりゅう）していくがいいよ、ゆっくりお前さんを送ってあげるから。もし欝陶（うっとう）しいのが嫌でなけりゃ、家の後には庭がある。気ばらしをするがいいよ。書物もあるから読むがいい。」
　翌日になって王は家の後へ歩いていった。果して半畝位の庭があって、細かな草が毛氈（もうせん）を敷いたように生え、そこの逕（こみち）には楊柳（やなぎ）の花が米粒を撒（ま）いたように散っていた。そこに草葺（くさぶき）の三本柱の亭（あずまや）があって、花の木が枝を交えていた。
　王は小刻みに歩いてその花の下をいった。頭の上の樹の梢（こずえ）がざわざわと鳴るので、ふいと顔をあげてみた。そこに嬰寧があがっていたが、王を見つけるとおかしくておかしくてたまらないというように笑いだした。王ははらはらした。
「およしよ、おっこちるよ。」
　嬰寧は木からおりはじめた。おりながらとめどもなしに笑って廃（よ）すことができなかった。そして、やっと足が地にとどきそうになってから、手を滑らして堕ちた。それと一緒に笑いもやんだ。王は嬰寧を扶け起したが、その時そっとその腕をおさえたので、嬰寧の笑いがまたおこった。嬰寧は樹にかきつくようにして笑って歩くこともできなかったが、暫くしてやっとやんだ。
　王は嬰寧の笑いやむのを待って、袖の中から彼の萎（しお）れた梅の花を出して、
「これを知ってるの。」
　といった。嬰寧は受け取っていった。
「枯れてるじゃないの。なぜ、こんな物を持ってるの。」
「これは上元の日に、あんたがすてたものじゃないか。だから持っているのだよ。」
「持っててどうするの。」
「あんたを愛するためだよ。上元の日にあんたに逢ってから、思いこんで病気になって、もう死ぬるかと思ったのだよ。それがこうして逢えたから、気の毒だと思っておくれよ。」
　嬰寧はいった。
「そんなことなんでもないわ。親類の間柄ですもの、兄さんがお帰りの時、老爺（じいや）を呼んで来て、庭中の花を大きな篭（かご）へ折らせて、おぶわしてあげますから。」
　王はいった。
「馬鹿だなあ。」
　嬰寧はいった。
「なぜ、馬鹿なの。」
　王はいった。
「私は花が好きじゃないよ、花を持っていた人が好きなのだよ。」
　嬰寧はいった。
「親類じゃないの、愛するのはあたりまえだわ。」
　王はいった。
「私が愛というのは、親類の愛じゃないよ、つまり夫婦の愛だよ。」
　嬰寧はいった。
「親類の愛だっておんなじじゃないの。」
「夫婦になったら一緒にいるのだよ。」
　嬰寧は俯向（うつむ）いて考えこんでいたが、暫（しばら）くしていった。
「私、知らない人と一緒にいたことないわ。」
　その言葉のまだ終らない時に、婢がそっとやって来たので、王はあわてて逃げた。
　暫くして王と女は、老婆の所で逢った。老婆は嬰寧に訊いた。
「どこへいってたね。」
　嬰寧はいった。
「庭で話していたわよ。」
　老婆はいった。
「とうに御飯ができてるのに、何の話をしていたのだよ。またお喋りをしていたのだろう。」
　嬰寧はいった。
「兄さんが私と一緒に……。」
　王はひどく困って急に嬰寧に目くばせした。嬰寧はにっと笑ってよした。しかし幸にしてそれは老婆に聞えなかったが、そのかわり老婆はくどくどと嬰寧の長く帰らなかった理由を訊いた。そこで王は他のことをいって打ち消し、そのうえで小声で嬰寧を責めた。
「あんな馬鹿なことをいうものじゃないよ。」
　すると嬰寧がいった。
「あんなことをいってはいけないの。」
　王はいった。
「そんなことをいうのは、人に背（そむ）くというのだよ。」
　嬰寧はいった。
「他人に背いても、お祖母（かあ）さんには背かれないわ。それに一緒にいることなんて、あたりまえのことじゃないの、何も隠さなくってもいいじゃないの。」
　王は嬰寧に愚（おろ）かな所のあるのを残念に思ったが、どうすることもできなかった。
　食事がちょうど終った時、王の家の者が二疋（ひき）の驢（ろば）を曳（ひ）いて王を探しに来た。それは王が家を出た日のことであった。王の母親は王の帰りを待っていたが、あまり帰りが遅いので始めて疑いをおこし、村中を幾日も捜してみたがどこにもいなかった。そこで呉の家へいった。呉はでたらめにいった自分の言葉を思いだして、西南の山の方へいって尋ねてみよと教えた。家の者は幾個かの村を通って始めてここに来たのであった。王は門を出ようとして、その人達に逢ったのであった。王はそこで入っていって老婆に知らし、そのうえ嬰寧を伴（つ）れて帰りたいといった。老婆は喜んでいった。
「私がそう思っていたのは、久しい間のことだよ。ただ私は、遠くへいけないから、お前さんが伴れて、姨（おば）さんに見知らせてくれると、好い都合だよ。」
　そこで老婆は、
「寧子や。」
　といって嬰寧を呼んだ。嬰寧は笑いながらやって来た。老婆は、
「何の喜しいことがあって、いつもそんなに笑うのだよ。笑わないと一人前の人なのだが。」
　といって、目に怒りを見せていった。
「兄さんがお前を伴れていってくれるというから、仕度をなさいよ。」
　老婆はまた使の者に酒や飯を出してから、一行を送りだしたが、その時嬰寧にいった。
「姨（おば）さんの家は田地持ちだから、余計な人も養えるのだよ。あっちにいったなら、どうしても帰ってはいけないよ。すこし詩や礼を教わって、姨さんに事（つか）えるがいい。そして、姨さんに良い旦那をみつけてもらわなくちゃいけないよ。」
　二人は出発して山の凹みにいって振りかえった。ぼんやりではあるが老婆が門に倚（よ）って北の方を見ているのが見えた。やがて二人は王の家へ着いた。母親は美しい女を見て訊いた。
「これはどなた。」
　王は、
「それは姨さんの家の子供ですよ。」
　といった。母親は、
「姨って、いつか呉さんのいったことは、うそですよ。私には姉なんかありませんよ、どうして甥（めい）があるの。」
　といって、嬰寧の方を向いていった。
「ほんとに私の甥（めい）なの。」
　嬰寧はいった。
「私、お母さんの子じゃないの。お父様は秦という苗字なの。お父様の没（な）くなった時、私、あかんぼでしたから、何も覚えはありませんの。」
　王親はいった。
「そういえば、私の一人の姉が、秦（しん）へ嫁入ってたことは確かだが、没くなってもう久しくなっているのに、なんでまた生きているものかね。」
　そこで顔の恰好や痣（あざ）や贅（いぼ）のあるなしを訊いてみると一いち合っている。しかし母親の疑いは晴れなかった。
「そりゃ合ってるがね。しかし没くなって、もう久しくなる。どうしてまた生きているものかね。」
　判断がつきかねている時、呉が来た。嬰寧は避けて室の中へ入った。呉は理由を聞いて暫くぼんやりしていたが、忽（たちま）ちいった。
「女は嬰寧といいやしないかい。」
「そうだよ。」
　と王がいった。呉は、
「いや、そいつは、怪しいよ。」
　といった。王は呉が女の名を知っていることを先ず聞きたかった。
「君はどうしてその名を知っているね。」
「秦の姑（おば）さんが没くなった後で、姑丈（おじ）さんが鰥（やもめ）でいると、狐がついて、瘠（や）せて死んだが、その狐が女の子を生んで、嬰寧という名をつけ、むつきに包んで牀（とこ）の上に寝かしてあるのを、家の者は皆見ていたのだ。姑丈（おじ）が没くなった後でも、狐が時おり来ていたが、後に張天師のかじ符（ふだ）をもらって、壁に貼（は）ったので、狐もとうとう女の子を伴れていったのだか、それじゃないかね。」
　皆で疑っている時、室の中からくつくつと笑う声が聞えて来た。それは嬰寧の笑う声であった。母親はいった。
「ほんとに彼（あ）の子は馬鹿だよ。」
　呉が女に逢ってみようといいだした。そこで母親が室の中へ呼びにいった。嬰寧はまだ大笑いに笑っていてこっちを向かなかった。
「ちょっとおいでなさいよ。逢わせる人があるから。」
　嬰寧は始めて力を入れて笑いをこらえたが、また壁の方に向ってこみあげて来る笑いをこじらしているようにしていて、時を移してからやっと出たが、わずかに一度お辞儀をしたのみで、もうひらりと身をかえして室の中へ入って、大声を出して笑いだした。それがために家中の婦（おんな）が皆ふきだした。
　呉はその不思議を見きわめて、異状がなければ媒酌人（ばいしゃくにん）になろうといって、西南の山の中の村へ尋ねていった。そこには家も庭もまったくなくて、ただ木の花が落ち散っているばかりであった。呉は姑（おば）の墓がそのあたりにあるような気がしたが、何も墓らしいものが見えないので、疑い怪しみながら帰って来た。
　母親は呉の報告を聞いて、嬰寧を幽霊ではないかと疑って、その室へ入っていって、
「お前さんの家は、ないというじゃないか、どうしたの。」
　といったが、嬰寧はべつにあわてもしなかった。
「お気の毒ねえ、家がなくなって。」
　ともいったが、べつに悲しみもせずに笑うばかりであった。
　嬰寧は何につけても笑うばかりであるから、だれもその本姓を見きわめることはできなかった。母親は夜、嬰寧と同じ室に寝ていた。嬰寧は朝早く起きて朝のあいさつをした。裁縫をさしていると手がうまかった。ただ善く笑うだけは止めても止まらなかった。しかし、その笑いはにこにこしていて、狂人のように笑っても愛嬌（あいきょう）をそこなわなかった。それで人が皆楽しく思って、隣の女や若いお嫁さん達が争って迎えた。
　母親は吉日を択（えら）んで王と嬰寧を結婚させることにしたが、しかし、どうも人間でないという恐れがあるので、ある日、嬰寧が陽（ひ）の中に立っているところを窺（のぞ）いてみた。影がはっきりと地に映っていてすこしも怪しいことはなかった。そこで母親はその日が来ると華かな衣装を着せて儀式の席へ出したが、嬰寧がまた笑いだして顔をあげることができないので、儀式はとうとうできずに終った。王は嬰寧が馬鹿なために二人の間の秘密を漏らしはしないかと恐れたが、それは決して漏らさなかった。
　母親が心配したり腹を立てたりする時に、嬰寧が傍へいって一度笑うと、それでなおってしまった。婢（じょちゅう）や奴（げなん）が過（あやま）ちをしでかして、主婦に折檻（せっかん）せられるような時には、嬰寧の所へ来て、一緒にいって話してくれと頼むので、一緒にいってやるといつも免（ゆる）された。
　嬰寧は花を愛するのが癖になっていた。そっと金の釵（かんざし）を質に入れて、その金で親類の家をかたっぱしから探して、佳（よ）い花の種を買って植えたが、数月の中に、家の入口、踏石（ふみいし）、垣根（かきね）、便所にかけて花でない所はなくなった。庭の後に木香（もっこう）の木の棚があった。それは元から西隣の家との境にあった。嬰寧はいつもその棚の上に攀（よ）じ登って、薔薇（ばら）の花のようなその花を摘んで頭髪にさした。母親は時どきそれを見つけて叱ったが嬰寧はついに改めなかった。
　ある日、西隣の男がこれを見つけて、じっと見とれたが、嬰寧は逃げもせずに男の方を見て笑った。西隣の男は女が自分に気があると思ったので、心がますますとろけた。と、女は牆（かきね）の下に指をさして笑ってからおりていった。西隣の男は女が晩にここへ来いといったと思ったので、大悦びで日の暮れるのを待ちかねて牆の下へいった。いってみると果して女が来ていた。西隣の男はすぐ抱きかかえた。と体の一部が錐（きり）で刺されたように痛さが体にしみわたったので、大声に叫ぶなり（たお）れてしまった。その男の女と思ったのは一本の枯木であった。その男の父親は悴（せがれ）の叫び声を聞きつけて走って来て、
「おい、どうした、どうした。」
　といったが悴は呻（うめ）くのみで何もいわなかった。そこへ細君が来たので悴は事実を話した。そこで火を点（つ）けて枯木の穴を照らしてみた。そこには小さな蟹（かに）のようなさそりがいた。父親は木を砕いてさそりを殺し、悴をおぶったが、夜半頃になって悴は死んでしまった。
　西隣では王を訟（うった）えて、嬰寧が怪しいことをするといった。村役人はかねてから王の才能を尊敬して、篤行の士と言うことを知っていたので、西隣の父親のいうことは誣（し）いごとだといって、杖（むち）で打たそうとした。王は西隣の父親のためにあやまってやったので、西隣の父親は釈（ゆる）してもらって帰って来た。
　王の母親は嬰寧にいった。
「馬鹿なことをするから、こんなことになるのだよ。もう笑うことはよして、悲しいことも知るがいいよ。村役人は幸にわかった方だから、よかったものの、これがわからない役人だったら、きっとお前を役所で調べたのだよ。もしこんなことがあったら、あれが親類へ顔向けができますか。」
　嬰寧は顔色を正していった。
「もう、これからは、決して笑いません。」
　母親はいった。
「人は笑わないものはないから、笑ってもいいが、ただ時と場合を考えなくちゃ。」
　嬰寧はこれからはまたと笑わなかった。昔の知人に逢ってもついに笑わなかった。しかし、終日淋（さび）しそうな顔はしなかった。
　ある夜、嬰寧は王といる時に、涙を流した。王は不思議に思って訊（き）いた。
「どうした。」
　すると嬰寧はむせび泣きをしていった。
「これまでは日が浅いから、こんなことをいったら、怪しまれるだろうと思って黙っていましたが、今ではお母さんもあなたも、皆さんが私を可愛がってくださって、へだてをしてくださらないからありのままに申しますが、私はもと狐から生まれたものです。母が他へゆくことになって、私を没くなっているお母さんに頼んだものですから、私は十年あまりもお母さんの世話になってて、今日のようなことになりました。私には他に兄弟もありませんし、恃（たの）みにするのはあなたばかりです。今、お母さんは寂しい山かげにいるのですが、だれもお父さんの傍へ葬ってくれないものですから、お母さんはあの世で悲しんでいるのです。あなたがもし、費用をおかまいなさらないなら、あの世の人の悲しみをなくしてやってください。私をお世話してくだされてるから、すてておくこともできないと思って。」
　王はうなずいた。
「いいとも、だがどこにあるだろう。」
　嬰寧はいった。
「すぐ判（わか）ります。」
　日を期して二人は（ひつぎ）を持って出かけていった。嬰寧はいばらの生い茂った荒れはてた中を指さした。掘ってみると果して老婆の尸（しがい）があった。皮膚も肉体もそのままであった。嬰寧はその尸を撫（な）でて泣いた。
　そこで二人はその尸をに入れて帰り、秦氏の墓を尋ねて合葬した。その夜、王の夢に老婆が来て礼をいって帰った。王は寤（さ）めてそれを嬰寧に話した。嬰寧はいった。
「私は、ゆうべ逢ったのですよ。あなたをびっくりさしてはいけないというものですから。」
　王はいった。
「なぜ留（と）めておかなかったのだ。」
　嬰寧はいった。
「あの人はあの世の人ですから、生きた人の多い、陽気の勝った所にはいられないのです。」
　そこで王は訊いた。
「小栄はどうしたのだろう。」
　嬰寧がいった。
「あれは狐ですよ。あれは気が利いてたから、母が私の世話をさしたものです。しょっちゅう木の実を取って来てくれました。だから私は有難いと思ってるのですが、母に訊きますと、もうお嫁にいったのですって。」
　その歳から冬至（とうじ）から百五日目にあたる寒食（かんしょく）の日には、夫婦で秦氏の墓へいって掃除するのを欠かさなかった。女は翌年になって一人の子を生んだが、抱かれているうちから知らない人を畏（おそ）れなかった。そして、人さえ見れば笑ってまた大いに母のふうがあった。

沂州有個書生，姓桑，名曉，字子明，自小失去父親，一個人在紅花埠借屋居住。桑生性情文靜，不好交往。除了每天去東鄰吃兩頓飯外，其餘時間都在住所。東鄰的書生與他開玩笑説：“你獨自一人住，不怕有鬼狐嗎？”桑生笑着説：“大丈夫還怕鬼狐？雄的來了，我有利劍；雌的來了，我還要開門收留她呢！”東鄰的書生回去後，與朋友們謀劃好了，到了晚上用梯子越牆把一個妓女送進桑生住的院子裏。那妓女走到桑生的房子前，輕叩房門。桑生瞧了瞧，問她是誰，那妓女自稱是鬼。桑生非常恐懼，牙齒格格地響。妓女在門外徘徊了一會才去了。 第二天凌晨，東鄰的書生來到桑生的書齋，桑生把夜間遇鬼的事訴説了一遍，並説要回家。東鄰的書生拍手大笑，譏笑他説：“怎麼不開門留她呢？”桑生一下明白是假鬼，隨即安心照常住下來。 過了半年，夜裏又有個女子叩門。桑生以為又是朋友與他開玩笑，便開門請她進來。一看，原來是個傾國傾城的美人。桑生吃驚地問她是從哪裏來的，女子説：“我叫蓮香，是西鄰的妓女。”因為紅花埠一帶妓院很多，桑生也便信而不疑。隨後，兩人滅燭登牀，親熱歡好。雲雨過後，女子穿衣起身離去。從此，每隔三五夜蓮香就來一次。 一天晚上，桑生獨自坐在書齋裏，對着燈凝想，一個少女輕輕推門進來。桑生以為是蓮香來了，忙起身與她説話。一照面，並不認識這少女。這少女約十五六歲，還沒束髮，兩臂下垂，長袖拖地，十分風流美麗，走起路來，飄然若仙。桑生十分驚奇，懷疑她是狐精。少女説：“我是良家女子，姓李。愛慕你高雅風流，希望你能見愛。”桑生一聽欣喜異常，急忙去拉她的手，卻涼如冰塊，他忙吃驚地問：“怎麼這樣涼啊？”少女回答説：“我自幼身單體弱，今晚來時又蒙了一身霜露，怎麼能不涼呢？”説罷寬衣上牀，兩人共赴巫山。親熱過後，桑生吃驚的發現她竟是處女。少女説：“我為情緣，把貞操獻給了你。若不嫌我醜陋，願常來陪伴。這裏還有別人來吧？”桑生説：“沒有別人，只是西鄰有個妓女，但不常來。”少女説：“應當避開她，我不同於妓院裏的人，請您一定保密。可以她來我去，她去我來。”不一會，雄雞報曉，少女便起身告辭。臨走，將一隻繡鞋贈給桑生，説：“這是我腳上穿的。常擺弄它可寄託你的思念之情。但是有外人在場時，千萬別擺弄它。”桑生接過繡鞋一看，尖尖的像錐子，很喜歡。第二天晚上沒人在屋，桑生就把鞋拿出來擺弄。少女忽然輕飄飄地來了，兩人又云雨一番。此後，只要拿出繡鞋，李女便隨即來到。桑生奇怪地詢問原因，李女笑着説：“是碰巧了。” 一天夜間，蓮香來到書房，吃驚地問道：“桑郎，你的氣色怎麼這樣不好啊？”桑生説：“我自己不覺得。”蓮香便起身告辭，約好十天後再相會。蓮香走後，李女每夜都來，從沒間斷。李女問桑生：“你的情人怎麼這麼長時間不來？”桑生便把兩人十天之約告訴了她。李女笑着説：“你看我比得上蓮香美嗎？”桑生説：“你兩人可稱雙絕。但相比之下，蓮香的體膚要比你温暖些。”李女聞言變色説：“你説雙美，是對我説。她必定是月宮嫦娥，我一定比不上她。”因此很不高興。算計起來，十天的約期已到。囑咐桑生不要説出去，到時她要偷偷地看一看蓮香。 次夜，蓮香果然來了。與桑生嬉笑言談，非常融洽。睡覺時，蓮香大為驚駭地説：“壞了！才十天不見，你怎麼勞損疲睏到這個程度啊？你保證沒別的女人來過嗎？”桑生問她為什麼這樣説，蓮香説：“我觀察你的精神氣色，脈像虛亂如絲，是被鬼纏身的症狀。” 次夜，李女進門，桑生就問：“你偷看蓮香長得怎樣？”李女答：“確實很美。我原來便認為人間沒有如此美貌的人，果然是個狐！她走後，我一直跟着，原來她住在南山一個山洞裏。”桑生懷疑李女忌妒，也沒理會她的話。 隔了一夜，桑生對蓮香戲言：“我是絕對不信，可偏有人説你是狐精。”蓮香慌忙問：“是誰説的？”桑生笑着説：“是我自己和你鬧着玩的。”蓮香説：“狐狸哪些地方與人不一樣？”桑生説：“被狐狸迷住的人都會得病，嚴重的還會喪命，因此很可怕。”蓮香説：“不是這樣。像你這般年齡，行房三天後，精氣便可復原。縱然是狐狸，也沒什麼害處。假若天天縱情淫樂，人比狐狸更厲害。世間死了那麼多淫徒、色鬼，難道都是被狐狸迷惑死的嗎？雖是如此，必定有人在背後説我的壞話。”桑生竭力表白沒有，蓮香追問得更急。迫不得已，就實説了。蓮香説：“我本來就奇怪你為什麼這樣衰弱，為什麼弱得這麼快，難道李女不是人嗎？你先不要聲張，明晚，我也像她那樣，偷偷看看她。” 到了夜間，李女來到，與桑生才説了幾句話，便聽到窗外有人咳嗽，慌忙離去。蓮香進屋對桑生説：“你太危險了！李女真是鬼！若還貪戀她的美色，不與她一刀兩斷的話，你的死期近了！”桑生以為蓮香嫉妒李女，也沒吭聲。蓮香説：“我知道你割不斷與她的感情。可是我也不忍心看你死去。明天，我會帶藥來醫治你的病毒。幸虧中毒不深，十天就可治好。請允許我看護着你康復。” 次夜，蓮香果然帶了一小包藥來，給桑生服藥不大工夫，就瀉了二三次。桑生只覺得內臟清爽，精神倍增。心中雖然感激蓮香，但始終不信自己患的是鬼病。蓮香夜夜同牀陪伴着桑生；他幾次求歡，都被蓮香拒絕了。幾天後，桑生的身體又健壯起來。蓮香臨走，殷切囑咐桑生，一定要斷絕與李女的關係，桑生假意答應了。 待到桑生夜間閉門後，又在燈下將繡鞋拿出把玩。李女忽然來了，幾天不見，她一臉不高興。桑生説：“她天天為我煎藥治病，請不要怨她。對你好不好在我。”李女這才稍稍高興些。桑生在枕邊小聲説：“我最愛你了，但有人説你是鬼。”李女張口結舌了很久，才罵道：“這一定是那個騷狐狸精亂説一氣來迷惑你！你若不與她斷絕往來，我就不再來了。”説完就嗚嗚地哭，桑生説了無數勸慰的好話，她才罷休。 隔了一夜，蓮香來了，知道李女又來過，生氣地説：“你是一定想死了！”桑生笑着説：“你怎麼這樣妒忌她呢？”蓮香更氣惱地説：“你得了絕症，我為你治好了，不妒忌的人又怎樣做呢？”桑生仍假託玩笑説：“李女説，前幾天我的病是狐狸作祟造成的。”蓮香嘆了口氣説：“真像你説的這樣，你就太執迷不悟了！萬一不好，我縱有一百張嘴也解釋不清了。請從此分別，一百天後，我再來看躺在病牀上的你。”桑生挽留她，蓮香不聽，氣憤地去了。 從此，李女無夜不來與桑生歡會。大約過了兩個月，桑生便覺得渾身乏力，委靡不振。起初還自我安慰，後來，一天天變得枯瘦如柴，每頓飯只能喝一碗粥。本想回家調養，但還是戀着李女不忍離去。捱了幾天，終於病倒牀上，再也起不來了。鄰生見他病重，天天派書童來送飯送水。直到這時，桑生才懷疑李女，對她説：“我悔不該不聽蓮香的話，弄到這步田地！”説完便昏死過去。過了好久才甦醒過來，睜眼四下看了看，李女早沒了蹤影。從此關係斷絕。 桑生一個人躺在空房裏，盼望蓮香盼得望眼欲穿。一天，他正在想念蓮香時，忽然有人掀簾進來。睜眼一看，果然是蓮香。蓮香走到牀前，嘲笑着説：“鄉巴佬，我是瞎説嗎？”桑生泣不成聲，過了一陣，自己説知道錯了，求蓮香快救命。蓮香説：“你已病入膏肓，實在無法救治了。我這是來向你訣別的，以證明我並不是出於嫉妒。”桑生非常難過地説：“我枕頭底下有件東西，煩你替我把它弄壞！”蓮香找出，見是隻繡鞋，便拿到燈下，反覆細看。李女忽然進來，一見蓮香，轉身想逃。蓮香用身體擋住了門。李女很窘，急得不知從哪裏走。桑生數落着指責李女，李女無言以對。蓮香笑着説：“我今天才有機會與你當面對質。以前你説桑郎的病不是你造成的，今天看你怎樣説？”李女低頭謝罪。蓮香説：“這麼漂亮的美人，怎麼會為了愛結仇呢？”李女跪在地上哭得很悲痛，懇請蓮香救救桑生。 蓮香便把李女扶起來，詳細詢問她的生平。李女説：“我是李通判的女兒。少年夭亡，埋在院外。我好比是死了的春蠶，情絲未斷，與桑郎交好，是我的心願。致他於死地，確實不是出於本心。”蓮香説：“聽説鬼都願致人於死地，以圖死後在陰間可以常在一起，是嗎？”李女説：“不是。兩個鬼在一塊，沒什麼樂趣。如有樂趣，陰間的少年郎難道少嗎？”蓮香説：“傻呀！夜夜交歡，人都受不了，何況是鬼呢？”李女也問：“聽説狐能迷人致死，你有什麼法術能不致如此呢？”蓮香説：“你説的是那些採人精血補養自身的狐。我不是那一類的。因此，世間有不害人的狐，而決沒有不害人的鬼，這是因為鬼的陰氣太盛了！”桑生聽了她們的對話，才知道鬼狐都是真的。幸虧相處已久，根本沒覺得害怕。但一想到自己已是奄奄一息的人，不由得失聲痛哭起來。蓮香問李女：“你有救桑郎的辦法嗎？”李女紅着臉搖頭，説無能為力。蓮香笑説：“恐怕桑郎身體健壯後，醋娘子又要吃楊梅了。”李女拜了拜説：“如有高明醫生救得桑郎，使我不負罪郎君，我一定在陰間老老實實，哪敢有臉再到人間來！”蓮香解開藥袋，取出藥來説：“我早就知道有今天。分別後，我跑遍了三山五嶽，採集草藥，歷時三個多月，才配齊了藥方。損勞過度待死的人，服用後沒有不康復的。但是，病因誰得，還須由誰出藥引子，這就不得不轉求你全力協助。”李女問：“需要什麼？”蓮香説：“櫻桃小口中的一點唾液罷了。我將藥丸放進他口中，煩你口對口用唾液把它送下去。”李女聽罷羞得面紅耳赤，低着頭直瞅着繡鞋犯難。蓮香取笑説：“妹妹最得意的就只有繡鞋！”李更感羞慚，無地自容。蓮香又説：“這不是你往常最熟練的技巧嗎？今天怎麼這樣吝嗇？”説罷將藥丸放入桑生的口中，轉身催促李女。李女不得已，只好口對口地輸送唾液。蓮香説：“再唾。”李女唾了一口，一連三四次，藥丸才被送下去。不一會，就聽到桑生的肚子雷鳴般地響起來。蓮香又給他服下一丸後，親自為他接唇布氣。桑生覺得丹田發熱，精神煥發。蓮香説：“病好了。”這時雄雞報曉，李女彷徨地告別走了。 蓮香因桑生初愈，還需調養。特別是吃喝沒有着落，便將院門反鎖，讓人誤認桑生已回家，藉以斷絕外界來往，自己日夜護理他。李女也每夜必來，殷勤伺候。侍奉蓮香也像親姐姐一般。蓮香也很疼愛她，過了三個月，桑生完全恢復了健康，此後，李女一連好幾夜沒來。有時來了，也只是看一看便走。對坐時，也總是悶悶不樂。蓮香曾多次留她與桑生共寢，她都堅決不肯。有一次桑生追上她，硬把她抱回來，覺得她身子輕如草人。李女走不成，回來便和衣而卧，身子蜷曲起來不到二尺長。蓮香越發愛憐她，示意桑生擁抱她，但無論怎樣，也搖不醒她。桑生無奈只好自己睡下。及至醒來找她時，又不知去向了。此後十幾天，李女再也沒來過。桑生非常想念她，經常拿出繡鞋來與蓮香共同把玩。蓮香説：“如此美貌女子，我見了都很喜歡她，何況你們男人呢？”桑生説：“以前，一動繡鞋，她立刻就到，心裏很懷疑，但是始終沒想到她是鬼。現在見鞋思人，實在太令人難過了。”説着説着，淚流滿面。 

這以前，有個姓張的財主，他的女兒名叫燕兒，十五歲時死了。過了一夜又甦醒過來，睜眼一看，起身就向外跑。張財主急忙關上門，她出不去，便自己説：“我是李通判女兒的靈魂，感謝桑郎的關照，我送給他的繡鞋還在他那裏。我真的是鬼啊，關起我來有什麼好處呀！”張翁聽她説的有些緣故，就問她為何來到這裏。燕兒低頭看了一下，自已也解釋不清楚。旁邊有人説桑生已經生病回家了，燕兒執意分辯説沒有，家人非常懷疑。東鄰的書生聽説這事，就從牆頭上偷偷觀察桑生住處，見桑生正與一個美女説話，他就突然闖了進去，倉促之間，已不見女子的蹤影。鄰生很驚疑，再三追問桑生，桑生笑着説：“我過去與你説過，雌的來了我就留下她！”鄰生將燕兒剛才的話，向桑生説了一遍。桑生馬上開鎖出門，想去打聽一下。但轉念一想沒有去的理由，十分苦惱。 張母聽説桑生果然沒有回家，越發覺得奇怪，就派傭女到桑生那裏要繡鞋。桑生將鞋交給她。燕兒見到繡鞋十分高興，急忙試穿，繡鞋卻比腳小了一寸多。她大吃一驚，拿過鏡子一照，模模糊糊像是明白自己是借屍還魂了。於是便把以前發生的事細細説了一遍，張母才相信了。燕兒對鏡哭着説：“我對那時的容貌很有自信，但是每當見了蓮香姐，還自愧不如。而今成了這個樣子，做人還不如做鬼呢！”拿着繡鞋放聲大哭，誰也勸説不住。哭完後，蒙上被子就躺在牀上，飯也不吃。不久，全身浮腫起來，七天不吃東西，也沒死，而浮腫卻漸漸消了。此後，她便飢餓難忍，開始吃飯。過了幾天，渾身發癢，脱了一層皮。早晨起牀時，睡鞋掉下來，抬起來再穿時，鞋子又肥又大。試穿以前的繡鞋，肥瘦正合適。她很是喜歡，再照鏡子，眉眼已和過去一樣，更為高興。梳洗打扮好了，去見母親，全家人見到她都非常驚訝地盯着她看。 蓮香聽説這一奇聞，就勸桑生向張家提親。桑生覺得兩家貧富懸殊，沒敢唐突去提。不久，逢張母壽辰，桑生就隨着張家的子婿們前去祝壽。張母見帖上有桑生的名字，就讓燕兒躲在簾子後偷偷辨認。桑生最後一個到，燕兒急忙跑上去，拉住桑生的袖子，要跟他一塊回家。張母訓斥她一頓，燕兒才害羞地回到屋裏。桑生仔細辨認燕兒，確是李女再生，不覺流淚，拜倒在張母面前不起來。張母忙上前把他扶了起來，並不輕視他。桑生出來後，就託燕兒的舅舅前去提親。張母議定下良辰吉日，招桑生為養老女婿。桑生回去，把這事告訴蓮香，並商量怎麼辦。蓮香難過了好一陣子，才決定要和桑生分別。桑生大吃一驚，淚如雨下。蓮香説：“你被人家招贅成婚，我跟着去，有什麼臉面？”桑生再三考慮，還是先與蓮香一起回家，再回來迎娶燕兒，蓮香應允。桑生把實情告訴了張家，張家聽説他已有了妻子，便怒氣衝衝地訓斥他。燕兒在一旁極力為桑生辯解，張家才同意了桑生的請求。 婚期到了，桑生親自去迎娶燕兒。他家的擺設本來很不像樣，可是等迎親回來時，從大門到新房，全是花氈鋪地；千百隻燈籠蠟燭，照耀得如同白晝。蓮香扶新娘入了洞房，矇頭綢一揭下，她們就高興得像以前那樣。蓮香陪伴他倆喝合婚酒，細細詢問了燕兒還魂的事。燕兒説：“那天離開後，心中悶悶不樂，覺得自己是鬼，沒臉見你們，決定再也不回墳裏去了，便隨風漂游。每每見到世上的人，就非常羨慕。白天藏在草叢中，夜裏便由着自己的腳信步走。偶然到了張家，見一個少女病死在牀上，魂就附到她身上，沒想到真的活了。”蓮香聽了，沉默了好久，像是在思索什麼。 過了兩個月，蓮香生下一個兒子。產後得病，日漸沉重。她握住燕兒的手説：“我只好把孩子託付給你了，希望你能把他當作親生兒子來撫養。”燕兒流下了眼淚，並千方百計地勸慰她。幾次要給她請醫生，都被蓮香拒絕了。眼看着蓮香生命垂危，只有一絲氣息，桑生和燕兒都難過得哭泣。忽然她又睜開眼説道：“不要這樣，你們願我活，我卻願意死。若有緣分，十年之後還能再見面。”説完就斷了氣。掀開被要給她穿壽衣時，她已化為狐。桑生不忍心另眼相待，仍以隆重的葬禮安葬了她。 蓮香生的孩子，取名狐兒。燕兒撫養他如同親生。每逢清明節，都抱着他到蓮香的墳上哭祭。後來，桑生考中了舉人，家境漸漸富裕起來。而燕兒一直愁着沒有生育。狐兒聰明伶俐，只是體弱多病。燕兒就經常勸桑生再娶一妾。 一天，丫鬟忽來稟報：“門外有個老婆子，領着個女孩要賣。”燕兒就讓領進來看看。乍見面，便吃驚地説：“蓮香姐轉世了！”桑生細看那女孩，酷似蓮香，也覺驚異。便問：“多大了？”回答説：“十四歲。”又問：“聘金要多少？”老太婆答：“我這孤老婆子，只有這麼個閨女，但願能給找個好人家，我也有個吃飯的地方，日後老骨頭不至於丟在荒山野谷中，也就滿足了。”桑生多付了些銀兩，買下姑娘。 燕兒握住姑娘的手，來到內屋，托起她的下頜笑問：“你認識我嗎？”姑娘回答：“不認識。”細問她的身世，姑娘説：“我姓韋，父親在徐城賣酒，已死了三年了。”燕兒數着指頭細算，蓮香已死了整十四年。再仔細觀察姑娘的容貌神態，無處不像蓮香。於是拍拍她的頭大聲叫道：“蓮姐！蓮姐！你説十年後再見面，當真沒騙我。”姑娘像大夢初醒似地“咦”了一聲，盯着燕兒細看。桑生見狀高興得笑着説：“這真是‘似曾相識燕歸來’啊！”姑娘流着淚説道：“是了！聽母親説，我一出生就會説話，家中人以為是不祥之兆，讓我喝了狗血，就忘記了前世因果，今天才如夢初醒。娘子，你就是那個不願做鬼的李妹妹嗎？”三人共同回憶前生的事，百感交集。 寒食節那天，燕兒説，“今天是我與桑郎每年哭祭姐姐的日子。”便與姑娘同到蓮香墓前，見墓地野草叢生，樹也長高了。姑娘也觸景傷情地嘆息。燕兒對桑生説：“我與蓮香姐兩世都是好友，不忍分離，應該把前世的屍骨同葬一墓。”桑生聽從她的意見，就挖開李女的墳，取出屍骨，運回來與蓮香的合葬在一起。親友們知道這樁怪事後，都穿着吉慶的服裝趕來觀看葬禮，不約而來的達幾百人。 我庚戌年南遊到了沂州，下雨天走不了，住在旅店裏。有個叫劉子敬的，是桑生家的一個表親，拿出同鄉王子章寫的《桑生傳》約萬餘字，我得以細看了一下。這裏只是故事的大概情況。 [2] 異史氏説：啊呀！死去的人想要求生，活着的人反而想要求死，天下最難得的東西，難道不是這個身體嗎？可惜擁有這個身體的人，往往將其置於一邊（即不愛惜這個身體），以至於厚着臉皮活着都不如狐狸（蓮香），悄無聲息的死了還不如鬼（李氏）。 作品鑑賞 編輯 如果説《嬰寧》中嬰寧是作者對人物形象的一種詩意昇華，在其身上更多地表現為一種理想色彩；那麼．在蓮香身上，作家更注重她現實屬性的刻劃，寫出了她的善良、友愛、智慧、重情，表現她出入現實人間的世俗美質。 這是一個為情而生，為情而死、為情死而復生的狐女形象。對桑生，她雖然不知情之所起，但卻一往情深。小説的前半部，寫她與李氏女鬼魂的反覆爭鬥，既是為保護自己的愛情權利，更重要的是出於關心自己心愛的桑生。她的這種愛，明顯帶有利他性，總是站在為桑生好的角度去看問題。這和《聊齋》中許多狐鬼只貪歡欲，而不愛惜對方的行為迥然有別，和李女更是形成了直接的對照。李女對桑生的欲求是“恆無虛夕”，而蓮香總是加以節制。就是他們初為相識的日子裏，蓮香也是“三五宿輒一至”。第一次為桑生治病，“夜夜同衾偎生”I當桑生欲與為歡時，她“輒止之”，使之徹底病除．表現出堅強的意志和更深層次的愛心。 這種愛心的延伸，表現為一種博愛式的善良。李女是她的情敵，更是致桑生將死的根源。在桑生面前，還多次詆譭她，但當她得知李女身世後．甚為同情，並以姐姐的身份相勸慰，使之幡然悔悟。兩人終於結為手足之情。 蓮香的愛，還是一種智慧的愛，因而，這種愛更持久堅韌，更富於悠長的回味。和李女盲目而躁急的愛形成鮮明對照。當桑生把她的忠告當作嫉妒之言時，她知道苦口婆心的勸告不會有效，於是採取迴避之策．直到桑生奄奄一息，“思蓮香如望歲”時，她才出現．讓事實教育桑生。對李女，她先是贊其美，以穩其心，再“細詰生平”，最後才指出她的過失，使李女既感受到她博大的胸懷，同時又認識了自己的錯處，並由感激而生悔改之心。這比桑生近乎無情的“責數之”，不知要高明多少倍。至於手到病除的醫術絕技，則更是她所獨有的。 蓮香對愛的追求，還表現出一種堅韌不拔的精神和耐心。當受到桑生誤解的時候，她-睇然逕去”，達三月之久。但這不是絕情的離別，相反，她是去“採藥三山”，因為她知道桑生遲早會有“沉綿不起”的一天。一弱女子，風餐露宿，攀崖登巖，需要多大的勇氣和吃苦耐勞的精神!她能這樣做，正是基於她有一顆深深的摯愛之心。當她看到李女附身還陽後，“默默若有所思”，成為人的願望更加強烈·但她要成為人，先還得成鬼。於是，便有為桑生生子後的“暴病”，並訂十年之盟．由鬼而投生韋家十四年後終得相見。其間的生活道路，雖然曲曲折折，時間漫長，但她總是朝着一個目標執着地前進。 整篇小説分為前後兩部分，前一部分主要寫蓮香與李女的反覆鬥爭，後一部分則寫蓮香仿效李女還陽所作的追求。作家正是在鬥爭和追求中，從多方面展現了她的種種美德。全篇採取“雙現法”．狐鬼並寫．蓮香與李女並寫，燕兒與韋女並寫，狐鬼世界和世俗人間並寫，彼此交替穿插，相互映襯。起伏跌宕，搖曳生姿，具有豐富的容量和卓越的敍事技巧。

　桑生（そうせい）は泝州（そしゅう）の生れであって、名は暁（ぎょう）、字（あざな）は子明（しめい）、少（おさな）い時に両親に死別れて紅花埠（こうかほ）という所に下宿していた。この桑は生れつき静かなやわらぎのある生活を喜ぶ男で、東隣の家へ往って食事をする他は、自分の座にきちんと坐っていた。あの日［＃「あの日」はママ］、東隣にいる男が来て冗談に言った。
「君は独りいるが、鬼（ゆうれい）や狐はこわくないのかい」
　桑は言った。
「男子が鬼や狐をこわがってどうする、もしくれば僕には剣があるさ、それも女なら門を開けて納（い）れてやるがね」
　隣の男は帰って往ったが、その夜友達と相談して妓（げいしゃ）を伴（つ）れて往って、垣に梯（はしご）をかけて門の中に入れて扉をことことと叩かした。桑はちょっと窺（のぞ）いて、
「どなた」
　と言って訊いた。妓は、
「私は迷って出てきたものでございます」
　と言った。桑はひどく懼（おそ）れて歯の根もあわずにわなわなと顫えた。妓もそれを見てあとしざりして帰って往った。隣の男は翌朝早く桑の斎（へや）へ往った。
「ゆうべはたいへんなことがあったよ」
　と言って、この世の女でない女の来たことを話して、
「僕はもう帰ろうと思ってるのだ」
　と言った。隣の男は手をうって言った。
「なぜ門を開けて納れなかったのかい、女なら納れるはずだったじゃないか」
　桑はそこで友達の悪戯（いたずら）であったということを悟った。で、安心して帰ることをよした。
　半年してのことであった。ある夜、室（へや）の扉を叩くものがあった。
「もし、もし」
　それは女の声であった。桑はまた友人の悪戯だろうと思ったので扉を開けて入れた。それは綺麗な若い女であった。桑は驚いて訊いた。
「君は何人（だれ）だね」
「私、蓮香（れんこう）と申しますの、この西の方にいる妓（こども）なのです」
　そこの紅花埠には青楼が多かったので、桑は女の言葉を疑わなかった。そこで燭（ひ）を消して二人で話した。
　女はそれから三日目か四日目にはきっとくるようになった。ある夜、桑が独り坐って女のことを思っているとひらひらと入ってきた女があった。桑は蓮香が来たと思ったので起って往って迎えた。
「よく来てくれたね」
　と言いながらその顔を見た。それは蓮香と違った女であった。年も僅かに十五六に見える、袖の長い、髪をおさげにした、たおやかな少女であった。桑はひどく驚いて狐ではないかと思った。女は言った。
「私、李（り）という家の女ですの、あなたの高雅な人格をお慕いしております、どうか忘れないでね」
　桑は喜んでその手を握ったが、手は氷のように冷たかった。桑は訊いた。
「なぜ、こんなに冷たいのです」
「小さいこんな体で、寒い所を来たのですもの」
　そして女はまた言った。
「私は年がゆかないのに、体が弱いのです、それに急にお父さんとお母さんを亡くして、世話をしてくれる方がありませんの、あなたのところへおいてくださらないこと、あなたは奥さんがおありになって」
　桑は言った。
「べつにそんな者はないが、ただ隣の妓がくるが、いつもはこない」
　女は言った。
「そのかたがいらしたら、私が帰りますわ、私、そんな人達とは違ってますから、あなたさえ黙っていらっしゃるなら、その方がいらしたら私が帰り、その方が帰ったら、私が来ますわ」
　（にわとり）が鳴いて女は帰って往った。帰る時繍（ぬい）のある履（くつ）を一つくれて言った。
「これは私の足につけていたものよ、これをいじって私のことを思ってくださると、私がいつでもまいりますわ、でも人のいる所ではいじらないようにね」
　桑はもらってそれを見た。結び目を解く錐（きり）のような爪端（つまさき）のそったものであった。桑は心でひどく悦（よろこ）んだ。翌晩になって蓮香もこないので、桑はかの履を出して女のことを思いながら弄（いじ）った。すると李は飄然と来た。二人はまた、仲好く話しこんだ。
　それを初めとして履を出して思うたびに李が来た。桑はふしぎに思って訊いた。
「どうして解るのだね、僕が履を出すことが」
　李は笑って言った。
「そりゃ、私がこようと思ってる時に、ちょうどあなたが履を出すのでしょ」
　ある夜蓮香が来て驚いて言った。
「あなたは、なぜこんなに弱っていらっしゃるのです、顔色も悪いじゃありませんか」
　桑は言った。
「そうかなあ、自分では解らないが」
　蓮香はそこで挨拶して帰って往った。帰る時十日目に逢おうという約束をした。蓮香の帰った後で李がまた来た。李の来るのは毎晩でこない晩はなかった。ある夜李が言った。
「あなたの好い人は、この比（ごろ）、ちっともお顔を見せないじゃないの」
　桑はそこで、
「十日目にくるという約束をしてあるのだよ」
　と言った。すると李が笑って言った。
「あなたは、私と蓮香さんと、どっちが佳い女だと思いますの」
「それは、どっちも佳い女だよ、ただ蓮香の方は肌が温かだがね」
　と桑は言った。李は顔色を変えて、
「あなたは、どっちも佳い女だとおっしゃるのですが、それは私に言うからでしょ、蓮香さんは月宮殿の仙女だわ、私なんかが、どうしてよりつけるものですか」
　と言って浮かない顔をした。そして指をおって計（かぞ）えた。それは蓮香のくる約束の日を計えるところであった。約束の十日はもう来ていた。李は言った。
「明日の晩、私、そっと蓮香さんを窺いてみるわ、知らさないでちょうだいね」
　翌晩になって蓮香が果して来た。二人は室に入って面白そうに話していた。そして枕についた時は蓮香はひどく駭（おどろ）いて言った。
「まあ、十日みないうちに、こんなにお体が悪くなったのですか、あなたはほかに好い方があるのでしょ」
　桑は言った。
「どうしてそれが解る」
「私が神気でためしてみると、脈搏が乱れているのです、これは憑（つ）きものがしてるのですよ」
　翌晩になって李がきた。桑は言った。
「ゆうべ蓮香を窺いたの、どうだったね」
　李は言った。
「綺麗な方だわ、だけど、どうも人間にあんな綺麗な方はないと思ったら、やっぱり狐ですよ、私は蓮香さんが帰るとき、後からつけて往くと、南の山の穴へ入ったのですもの」
　桑はそれは李のやきもちだろうと思ったので、いいかげんにあしらっていた。その翌晩になって蓮香が来た。桑は冗談に言った。
「僕はほんとうとは思わないが、ある人が君を狐だというのだよ」
「何人です、何人がそんなことを言ったのです」
　と蓮香はせきこんで訊いた。桑は笑った。
「僕の冗談だよ」
　蓮香は言った。
「狐だって、どこに人とちがうところがあります」
「狐は人を惑わすじゃないか、狐に憑かれて病気がひどけりゃ、死ぬるじゃないか、こわいよ」
　蓮香が言った。
「そうじゃありませんよ、あなたの年恰好なら、三日目には精力が回復しますから、たとい狐であっても害はありません、世の中には癆（ろうさい）の病気で歿（な）くなる人が多いのです、狐の害ばかりで死ぬるものですか、これはきっと、私のことを譏（そし）ったものがあるでしょ」
　桑は力（つと）めて言った。
「そんなものはないよ」
「ないことはありません、言ってください、さあ言ってください」
　蓮香がつっかかってくるので、桑もしかたなしに言った。
「実は一人くる者があるがね」
　蓮香は言った。
「そうでしょうとも、私はとうからあなたの弱っていらっしゃるのを不思議に思ってました、そんなににわかに体が悪くなったのは、どうしたというのでしょう、どうも人じゃないでしょう、あなたは黙っててくださいね、明日の晩にその人が私を窺いたように、私も窺いてやりますから」
　その晩になって李が来て、桑に二語三語話しかけたところ、窓（まど）の外でせきばらいの音がした。すると李は急に逃げて往った。そこへ蓮香が入って来て言った。
「あなた、大変ですよ、やっぱり人間じゃありません、疑わずに早く関係を絶つ方がよござんす、あなたは冥途が近いのです」
　桑は蓮香のやきもちだと思ったので、黙って何も言わなかった。蓮香は起って言った。
「私はあなたが、あの女の情にひかされているのを知っていますが、それでもあなたを殺すことはできませんから、明日、薬を持ってきて、病気を癒してあげます、まだそれほど病気がひどくないから十日すれば癒ります、私はあなたといっしょにいて、あなたの癒るのを待ちます」
　翌晩蓮香は薬を持ってきて桑に飲ました。間もなく桑は腹の中がさっぱりして精神が爽やかになった。桑は心の中で蓮香に感謝したが、しかし鬼病（きびょう）とは思わなかった。蓮香はその夜から桑の榻（ねだい）につきっきりになっていた。
　数日の後に桑は体も肥えてきた。そして、桑の体がもとのようになると蓮香は帰って往ったが、別れる時にだめをおした。
「よござんすか、きっと関係を絶つのですよ」
　桑は関係を絶つ気はなかったが、めんどうだから、
「いいとも、きっと絶つよ」
　と言った。そして、蓮香を送り出して扉を閉め、燈をかきたててかの履を出して弄りながら李のことを思った。と李がたちまち来たが数日隔てていたのでひどく怨んでいるようであった。桑は言った。
「蓮香が僕の病気を癒してくれたから、逢われなかった、まあ、そんなにおこらないがいい、皆僕の心の中にあることなのだから」
　そこで李の感情がやわらいできた。桑は李の耳に囁いた。
「僕は、君を愛しているのだが、君を人間じゃないというものがあるがね」
　李は黙ってしまった。そして、暫くして怒りだした。
「きっと、あの狐が言ったのだわ、もし、あなたが、それと関係を絶たないなら、私もうこないわ」
　とうとう李はなきじゃくりをはじめた。桑は困って、いろいろ言ってなだめたので、やっとおさまった。
　その翌晩蓮香が来たが、李のまた来たことを知って怒った。
「あなたはそんなに死にたいのですか」
　桑は笑って言った。
「君はあんまりやきすぎるよ」
　蓮香はますます怒った。
「あなたが死病の根を植えつけたのを、私がやっと除（と）ったじゃありませんか、やかないあの人は、あなたをどうしようというのです」
　桑はそこで女の言葉をはぐらかそうと思って、冗談を言った。
「あれが言ったが、この間の病気は狐の祟（たたり）だってね」
「そうですか」
　と蓮香はためいきをして、
「ほんきであなたがそうおっしゃるなら、あなたの迷いはさめていませんから、あなたにもしもの事があった時、私はなんといっても言いわけのしようがありませんから、私はこれから帰ります、百日の後にあなたを榻の中にお訪ねします」
　桑は留めようとしたがきかずに怒って帰って往った。それから李が毎晩のようにくるようになった。約二箇月ばかりすると桑は自分の体のひどくつかれたことを感じた。しかし、初めはたいしたこともあるまいと思っていたが、日ましに瘠せて弱ってきて、粥（かゆ）を一ぱい位しかたべられないようになった。自分の家へ帰って静養しようかと思ったが、李にみれんがあって思いきって帰ることもできなかった。ぐずぐずしているうちに数日経ったので、病気が重くなって起きることができなくなった。
　隣の男は桑が病気で起きられないようになったのを見ると、日々給仕に言いつけて食物を送ってこさした。その時になって桑ははじめて李を疑いだした。そこで李に言った。
「僕は蓮香の言葉を聞かなかったから、こんなになった」
　そう言ったまま桑は息を絶やしたが、暫くして生きかえって四辺（あたり）を見た。李はもう往ってしまっていなかった。それから李はこないようになった。桑は何人（だれ）もいない斎に寝て百日の後に訪ねてくると言った蓮香のことをおもっていた。それは農夫が穀物のできるのを待つのと同じように。
　ある日、同じように蓮香のことを思いつめていると、不意に簾（すだれ）をあけて入ってきた者があった。それは蓮香であった。桑の榻の傍へきて哂（わら）って言った。
「いなか者、私の言ったことがうそなの」
　桑は泣いて何も言えなかったが、やっと言った。
「僕が悪かった、あやまる、どうか助けてくれ」
　蓮香は言った。
「病が骨に入っては、どうすることもできないのです、私はちょっとあがりましたが、もうこれでお別れします、私はこれでやきもちでなかったことが解ればいいのです」
　桑はひどく悲しんで言った。
「これというのも、この枕の下の物がいけないのだ、僕に代ってこわしてくれ」
　蓮香が手をやってみると、彼の繍のある李の履があった。蓮香はそれを燈の前へ持って往って、あっちこっちとかえして見た。と、李が急に入ってきたが、蓮香を見るとそりかえって逃げようとした。蓮香は走って往って出口に立ちふさがった。李は立ちすくんでしまった。桑は李を責めた。
「俺をたぶらかしやがって、なんだ、きさまは、言え、言っちまえ」
　李は答えることができなかった。蓮香は笑って言った。
「私は、今、あなたと初めて顔をあわせるのですが、いつかの桑さんの病気は、私のせいだと言ったそうですが、このさまはどうしたのです」
　李は頭をさげてあやまった。
「私が悪うございました」
　蓮香は言った。
「こんな美しい方が、愛を仇にしてかえすとはどうしたものです」
　李は体を投げだして泣いた。
「悪うございました、どうか許してください」
　蓮香はそれを扶（たす）け起して精（くわ）しくその素性を訊いた。李は言った。
「私は、李通判（りつうはん）の女（むすめ）で、早く亡くなって、此所の牆（かき）の外に埋められているものです、私は死んでおりますけれども、情熱がまだ消えずにおりますから、若い方と交わりたいのが私の願いです、この方を殺そうとするのは、私の本心ではありません」
　蓮香は言った。
「あの世の人が、人の死ぬるのをいいことにしているのは、死後にいっしょになりたいからだというのですが、ほんとう」
　李は言った。
「そんなことはないのです、あの世の人ばかりが逢ったところで、なんにも楽しみはないのです、あの世の人でよければ、若い方はいくらでもあります」
　蓮香は言った。
「馬鹿ですわ、ね、え、毎日人を愛するのは、人間でさえも堪えられないのに、ましてあの世の人がね、え」
　桑が訊いた。
「狐はよく人を殺すのですが、なんのためにそうするのです」
　李は言った。
「人の精気を採って自分の精気をおぎなうものがそうするのです、私達はその類（たぐい）じゃないのです、だから人を害しない狐もあれば、人の害をしない鬼というものもないのです、これは陰気が盛だからですよ」
　桑はこの言葉を聞いて狐も鬼も皆あることを知ったが、二人とは慣れているので、それほど駭きはしなかった。ただ息が糸のようになってつまりそうになってきたので、覚えず叫ぼうとしたが声が出ずに身をもがいた。蓮香は李をみかえって訊いた。
「どうして手あてをしたものでしょう」
　李は顔を赧（あか）くしてへりくだって言った。
「すみません」
　蓮香は笑った。
「なに、まだ体は強いのですから、まだやいてもいいのですよ」
　李は襟を直して言った。
「もし、何処かに名医がありますなら、私がきっと癒してもらいます、それができれば、私は地の下に帰ります、もうこの世で恥をさらしません」
　蓮香は嚢（ふくろ）を解いて薬を出して言った。
「私はとうから今日あることを知ってましたから、三山へ往って薬を採って、三箇月してやっと調（ととの）いました、どんな病気でも癒らないものはありません、でもこの病気の原因は、あなたですから、この薬を飲ますには、あなたの体の物を用いなくてはいけないのです、願えましょうか」
　李は訊いた。
「どんなことでしょう」
　蓮香は言った。
「あなたの唾ですよ、私が丸薬を出しますから、それを口に入れて唾をつけてください」
　李はぽっと頬を赧くして俯向いた。その拍子にかの履を見た。蓮香は言った。
「あなたの思うとおりにできたのは、この履ですね」
　李はますます慚（は）じて、其所にいるのに堪えられないようであった。蓮香はそこで丸薬を桑の口に納れ、それから李の前に出した。李はしかたなしに嘗めた。蓮香は言った。
「もう一度願います」
　李はまたそれを嘗めた。そうして三四回も唾をつけた後にはじめて桑の口の中へ入れた。暫くすると桑の腹の中で雷の鳴るような音がおこった。蓮香はまた次の丸薬を出したが、それは自分が嘗めてから桑の口に納れた。桑は腹の中が火のように熱して、精神のいきいきとしてくるのを覚えた。蓮香は言った。
「これで癒った」
　李は（とり）の鳴くのを聴いて※（ほうこう）［＃「にんべん＋皇」、120-17］として帰って往った。蓮香は桑の病後の体を養うには物を食べさせないようにしなくてはいけないので、桑が故郷へ帰ったように見せかけて、桑の友達をこさせないようにしながら、夜も昼も桑の傍にいて看護した。李も毎晩来て手助けをしながら蓮香に姉のように事（つか）えた。蓮香もまた李をいたわってやった。
　桑は三箇月してもとのとおりの体になった。李は三四日おきにしかこないようになった。たまにくることがあってもちょっと桑を見ただけで帰って往った。いっしょにいてもさえない顔をしていた。蓮香はいつも留めていっしょに寝ようとしたが肯（き）かなかった。ある時桑は李の帰ろうとするのを追って往って抱きかかえて帰ってきたが、それは葬式の時に用いる茅（かや）で作った人形のように軽かった。李は逃げることができないので、とうとう着物を着たままに寝たが、その体をかがめると二尺にもたりなかった。蓮香はますます憐（あわれ）んだ。そして桑が眼を覚ました時には李はもういなかった。
　後、十日あまりになったが李は再びこなかった。桑は李に逢いたいがこないので、いつも履を出して弄った。蓮香は言った。
「ほんとうに綺麗な方ですわ、女の私が見てさえ可愛いのですもの、男の方は、ね、え」
　桑は、
「せんには履を弄るとすぐ来たから、疑うことは疑っていたものの、鬼ということは思わなかったよ、今、履を見てその容（さま）を思うことは、ほんとに堪えられないね」
　と言って涙を流した。
　その時紅花埠に章という富豪があった。十五になる燕児（えんじ）という字（おさなな）の女があって、結婚もせずに歿くなったが、一晩して生きかえり、起きて四辺を見たのち奔（はし）り出ようとした。女の父親があわてて扉を閉めて出さなかった。女は言った。
「私は通判の女の魂ですよ、桑さんに愛せられているのです、だからあすこに私の履が遺してあります、私はほんとうに鬼ですよ、私をたてこめたって何の益にもなりません」
　女の父親はその言葉によりどころがあるように思ったので、其所へ来た理由を訊いた。女は彼方を見此方を見してぼんやりとなって自分でも解らないようになった。その席にいた一人が、
「桑生は病気で国へ帰ったというじゃないか、そんなことはないだろう」
　と言った。女は、
「たしかにおります、帰ったというのは嘘です」
　と言って聞かなかった。章の家ではひどく疑っていた。東隣の男がそれを聞いて、垣を踰（こ）えてそっと往って窺いた。桑と美人が向きあって話していた。東隣の男はいきなり入って往った。女はひどくあわてていたが、そのまに見えなくなってしまった。東隣の男は言った。
「君は帰ってるはずじゃないか、どうしたのだ」
　桑は笑って言った。
「いつか君に言ったじゃないか、女なら納れるってね」
　東隣の男は燕児の言ったことを話した。桑は燕児の家へ往って探ろうとしたが口実がないので困った。燕児の母親は、桑生のまだ帰っていないことを聞いて、ますます不思議に思って、傭媼（やといばば）に履があるかないかを探らしによこした。桑生は履を出して与えた。
　燕児は履がくると喜んだ。そしてその履を穿（は）こうとしたが一寸ばかりも小さくって履けなかった。そこでひどく駭いて鏡を取って顔を映したが、たちまちうっとりとなって言った。
「お母さん、私の体には何人か他の人がいるのですよ」
　母親ははじめてその怪異を悟った。女はまた鏡を見てひどく泣いて言った。
「あの時には、私も容色（きりょう）に自信があったのだ、それでも蓮香姉さんを見ると恥かしかったが、今、かえってこんな顔になったのだ」
　傍にいる人は李の鬼であるということが解らなかった。女は履を取って泣き叫んで、なだめてもやめなかった。そして、蒲団にくるまって寝て、食物を持って往っても喫（く）わなかった。体は一めんに腫れて、七日位の間は何も喫わなかったが死ななかった。そして腫れがやっとひいて、ひもじくてたまらなくなったので、そこで食事をした。
　二三日して体一めんがくなって皮がことごとく脱けた。そして朝はやく起きて、病中にはいていた履の落ちているのを拾って履いたが、大きくて足に合わなかった。そこで桑の所からもらってきたかの履をつけてみるとしっくりと合った。燕児は喜んでまた鏡を執って見た。それは眉も目も頬も婉然たる李であった。燕児はますます喜んで湯あみをし頭髪を結って母を見た。見る者がその顔をじっと見詰めて驚いた。
　蓮香は燕児の不思議を聞いて、桑に勧めて媒（なこうど）をたのんで結婚させようとしたが、桑は貧富の懸隔（けんかく）が甚しいのですぐ蓮香の言葉に従うことができなかった。ちょうどその時、燕児の母の誕生日になった。桑はその小児の婿の往くに従（つ）いて往ってお祝いをした。母親は来客の中に桑の名あるを見てためしに燕児に言いつけて簾の間から窺いていて桑を見わけさした。
　桑は最後に往った。燕児はにわかに走り出て桑の袂をつかまえていっしょに帰ろうと言いだした。母親が叱ったのではじめてはじて入って往った。桑はその女をつくづく見るに婉然たる李であったから覚えず涙を流した。そこで母親の前に這いつくばってしまった。母親は桑を扶け起して侮らなかった。
　母親は自分の兄弟に媒を頼んで、吉（よ）い日を選んで桑を入婿にしようとした。桑は家へ帰って蓮香に知らして燕児と結婚することについて相談した。蓮香はかなしそうな顔をして聞いていたが、やや暫くして別れて帰ると言いだした。桑は駭いて理由を訊いた。桑は涙を流していた。蓮香は言った。
「あなたが、入婿になって、人の家へ往って婚礼するのに、私はどうして従いて往けましょう」
　そこで桑は故郷へ帰って燕児を迎えることにしたので、蓮香も承知した。桑はそこで章へ往ってその事情を話した。章の家では桑に細君のあるのを聞いて、怒って燕児をせめたが、燕児が力（つと）めてとりなしたので桑のねがいのようになった。
　その日になって桑は自分で燕児を迎えに往った。時日がすくなかったので家の中の設備ができていなかったが、新婦を伴れて帰ってみると、門から座敷に到るまで一めんに毛氈を敷きつめて、たくさんの蝋燭を点け、燦然として錦を張ったようになっていた。蓮香は新婦を扶けて式場に入った。その花嫁の顔にかける搭面をかけた容（かたち）までが李そっくりであった。
　蓮香は合※（ごうきん）［＃「丞／己」、125-11］の礼をあげる席にいっしょにいて、燕児の李に還魂（かんこん）の不思議なことを訊いた。燕児は言った。
「あの日、くさくさしていられないうえに、私の身分が違っているので、自分で体の穢（けがれ）が厭でたまらず、腹が立って墓にも帰らないで、風のまにまに往っているうちにも、生きた人が羨ましくってしかたがなかったのです、そして、昼は草木によっかかり、夜は足にまかせて、浮き沈みしていて、ふと章の家へ往って、少女が榻の上に寝ているのについたのです」
　蓮香は黙々としてそれを聞きながら心に思うことがあるようなふうであった。それから二箇月して蓮香は一人の児（こども）を生んだが、産後にわかに病気になって、日に日に重くなって往った。蓮香は燕児の手を取って言った。
「児を頼みますよ、私の子はあなたの子だから」
　燕児は泣いた。姑（しゅうとめ）がなぐさめて医師を呼ぼうとしたが蓮香は聞かなかった。蓮香の病気はますます重くなって、息ももうかすかになった。桑と燕児は声をあげて泣いた。すると蓮香が目を見はって言った。
「泣かないでください、あなた達は生きるのが楽しみだが、私は死ぬのが、楽しみですよ、もし縁があるなら、十年の後にまたお目にかかりますよ」
　蓮香はそう言ってから死んでしまった。蒲団を開いて死骸を収めようとすると狐になった。桑は不思議な物として見るに忍びないので手厚く葬った。桑は蓮香の生んだ子の名を狐児とつけた。燕児は自分の子のようにして愛し、清明の節には必ずそれを抱いて蓮香の墓へ往った。
　後（のち）十年、桑は郷試に及第して挙人となったので、家も漸く裕（ゆたか）になった。狐児は頗る慧（りこう）であったが、どうも体が弱くてよく病気に罹った。燕児はそれが育たなくなっては大変だと思ったので、いつも桑に妾を置けと言っていた。
　ある日、婢（じょちゅう）がきて一人の老婆が女の子を併れてきて、売りたいと言っていると知らした。燕児が呼び入れさした、そして燕児は女の子を見るなり、ひどく驚いたように言った。
「蓮香姉さんが、またいらしたわ」
　桑も出て往って見た。それは蓮香にそっくりの女であった。桑も駭いた。桑は訊いた。
「年はいくつだね」
「十四でございます、はい、旦那様」
「金はいくらだ」
「この年寄の一人しかない児でございますが、いいお家で御厄介になって、私が御飯が食べる所ができて、後日のたれ死をしないようでございますなら、結構でございます」
　桑は金を多く取らして女を家に置いた。燕児は女の子の手を握って密室へ入って往って、その襟に手をかけて笑った。
「おまえは、私を知らないの」
　女は言った。
「知りません」
「苗字は何というの」
「葦（い）といいます、父は徐城（じょじょう）で醤油を売っておりました。歿くなって三年になります」
　燕児は指を折って考えた。蓮香が歿くなってちょうど十四年になっている。またつくづくと女を見ると容貌から態度まで蓮香とそっくりであった。そこでその首筋を折って言った。
「蓮香姉さん、蓮香姉さん、十年して逢うと言った約束は嘘（うそ）ではなかったのですね」
　女はたちまち夢が醒めたようになって胸がひらけた。
「あ」
　そこで燕児をつくづく見た。桑は笑って、
「これかつて相識るの燕帰来に似たり」
　と晏殊（あんしゅ）の春恨詞（しゅんこんし）の一節を口にした。すると女は泣いて言った。
「そうです、私の母が言ってました、私が生れた時、よく自分で蓮香ということを言ったものですから、不祥だといって、犬の血を飲ましたものですから解らないようになっておりましたが、今日夢の醒めたようになりました」
　そこで共に前生の話をして、悲喜こもごもいたるという有様であった。寒食（かんしょく）の日になって燕が言った。
「今日は、蓮香姉さんにおまいりをする日ですよ」
　そこで三人で蓮香の墓へ往った。春草が離々（りり）と生（は）えて、墓標に植えた木がもう一抱えになっていた。女はそれを見て吐息した。燕児の李は桑に言った。
「私と蓮香姉さんは、両世の情好がありますから、離れているのに忍びません、どうかいっしょの穴に埋めてください」
　桑はその言葉に従って李の塚を開いて骨（こつ）を得て帰り、それを蓮香の墓に合葬した。親戚朋友がその不思議を聞き伝えて、祭祀の時のような服装をしてきたが、期せずして二三百人の者があつまった。
　予（蒲松齢（ほしょうれい））は庚戌（こうじゅつ）の歳（とし）、南に遊んで泝州に往き、雨にへだてられて旅舎に休んでいたが、そこに劉生子敬という者がある。その中表親に当る同社の王子章の撰する所の桑生伝を見せてくれたがこれはその梗概である。
